2020 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2020 Toyota Highlander

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 is an advanced mid-size SUV with seven-passenger capacity, responsive performance, value and high quality. Here, we compare the CX-9 to the 2020 Toyota Highlander to help illustrate these points and more.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 is the king of drivability

The CX-9 features a powerful 2.5 turbocharged 4-cylinder with standard AWD. It generates up to 250 hp and a responsive 320 lb-ft of torque. Each trim also matches up with a six-speed automatic transmission that adds manual-shift mode and a drive selection switch. Combined with the heavy torque, the CX-9 offers personalized and sporty performance.

The Highlander’s gas-only engine produces 295 horsepower, but its torque of 263 lb-ft is much less than the CX-9. The horsepower and torque also have to compensate for the heavier weight of some Highlander models. The output of the Highlander Hybrid does not fare so well. It has fewer horsepower (243) than the CX-9 and only produces 173 lb-ft of torque.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 makes a value statement

The all-wheel drive CX-9 is more accessible than the Highlander. Although the entry price for both vehicles is $39,990, you get more with the CX-9 at that price. The base GS model includes many features not found on the base Highlander L, including: AWD, rain-sensing wipers, multi-zone and rear air conditioning, driver-adjustable lumbar, and more. The Highlander only offers AWD beginning with a higher trim level that has a starting MSRP of $43,490.

Mazda also provides unlimited kilometre warranties on every new vehicle with the Mazda Unlimited plan. You don’t have to worry about budgeting distance so your warranty will not run out prematurely. This applies to the three-year New Vehicle, three-year Roadside Assistance, five-year Powertrain and seven-year Anti-Perforation warranties.

Unfortunately, Toyota’s warranties expire immediately when you exceed the kilometre limits. For example, the Basic Complete Vehicle Warranty expires at 60,000 km or three years (whichever comes first). Their five-year powertrain warranty expires at just 100,000 km. Hybrid models have longer warranties, but they only cover batteries and hybrid components.

Finally, the Mazda CX-9 is much more fun to drive than the outdated Highlander, which drives like like a high minivan.  The CX-9 is more stylish and has sportier attributes than the Highlander
