The number of safety technologies offered on new vehicles is increasing exponentially. More and more we are seeing impressive active and passive safety technologies found on new vehicles including most new Mazda models, but what do these two terms refer two? In essence, they refer to two different types of safety features designed to either prevent accidents or protect you after an accident has occured. Let’s take a closer look.

Active Safety

Active safety systems refer to technologies that prevent accidents. These include adaptive cruise control, automatic braking or lane departure warning. They use radars and sensors to scan the road and intervene should the driver not react to a preliminary warning of a potential danger.

Passive Safety

Passive safety involves technologies that protect you in the event of an accident. Examples include airbags. Other passive technologies are designed to help keep you safe without necessarily intervening in the process. Examples here include blind spot monitoring.
