2020 Mazda CX-9 vs 2020 Volkswagen Atlas

Our busy lives require solutions and large midsize 3-row SUVs are exactly what modern families need. With constant outings, mortgage payments and careers to worry about, it’s nice to have a dependable partner on which to rely on at all times. At the drop of a hat, it can take everyone to any activity, pick up a last-minute gift such as a bicycle or help your oldest move into his or her new apartment – you never need to wonder if it will all fit.

The 3-row SUV segment is a crowded one in which to shop for a new vehicle. To help you out, we have two of the latest additions to the category for you to consider: the 2020 Mazda CX-9 and 2020 Volkswagen Atlas. These SUVs serve identical purposes but, at times, go about doing their business in very different ways.

One major consideration for Canadian is fuel efficiency. Cars and SUVs are typically the second most expensive purchase we will make and as such, operating costs should ideally be kept at a minimum. Mazda has addressed this concern by offering, as standard, its latest and sophisticated turbocharged Skyactiv-G engine technology. The turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine provides up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque which is, in no uncertain terms, impressive. But wait, there’s more.

The Volkswagen Atlas can be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder which produces 235-horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Optionally, the Atlas receives a 3.6-liter V6 that is good for 276-horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. Now, not only is the CX-9 more powerful – torque is what gets a vehicle up to speed – but it is far more fuel efficient. A V6 AWD VW Atlas averages 13.8L/10.2L/100km while the Mazda CX-9 manages 11.6L/9.1L/100km (city/highway). This considerable difference can work out to a large sum of money every year.

As far as interior accoutrements are concerned, both SUV are extremely spacious. On this point, the Volkswagen Atlas has a slight advantage given its boxier exterior design. However, on the topic of styling, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 delivers more than simply vast amounts of utility. Both on the inside and out, Mazda designers have created a premium product with upscale touches throughout. From interior materials to exterior visual cues, the CX-9 is arguably to most fashionable SUV available.

With numerous standard amenities such as a 7-inch touchscreen (6.5-inch for the Atlas), Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and many active safety features, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 is also a value leader.
