2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson: Power and Handling Prevail

The Mazda CX-5 is the symbol of performance in the compact SUV segment. It offers powerful engine choices, well-calibrated chassis dynamics and an interior that easily rivals with luxury brands. Its exterior styling is also carefully crafted to stand out.

Here, we compare the 2021 Mazda CX-5 to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 deploys maximum performance

Performance is important, even in a compact SUV. And Mazda has mastered the art of performance on all facets. Thus, the CX-5 offers some of the best engines in the industry, paired with unparalleled levels of handling and dynamics thanks to extensive chassis development.

The 2021 CX-5’s base engine is a four-cylinder, 2.5 L engine which outputs 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. This provides plenty of standard power in four variants, and more torque than the 2022 Hyundai Tucson’s base powerplant, a four-cylinder 2.5-litre unit which only dishes out 180 lb-ft.

But Mazda pushes things further with the CX-5. Optional in the GT and standard in upper variants is the class-leading 2.5-litre turbocharged engine that delivers up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. This is much more torque than the Tucson’s top engine, giving the CX-5 the upper hand in terms of accelerations and dynamics.

For maximum handling, the CX-5 is also available with the advanced i-Activ all-wheel drive which reads road conditions and actively recalibrates itself in real time to provide optimal traction in all conditions. For optimal comfort and cornering, all CX-5s are equipped with Mazda’s own G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) system.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has the heart of a luxury SUV

Inside, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 provides a sportier and more refined interior than the 2022 Hyundai Tucson. This interior is carefully crafted with upscale textures and materials that combine to create an extraordinarily premium environment.

The CX-5 also takes the lead in terms of technology, with the available 10-speaker premium Bose sound system (only 8-speakers in the optional Bose system in the Tucson), as well as available Wireless Apple CarPlay and Centerpoint 2 Surround Technology and AudioPilot 2 Noise Compensation technology.
