2021 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2021 Ford Explorer: Amazing Midsize SUV Value

With a sophisticated presence, impressive value, and the exciting Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is earning owners all over Canada. This crossover features abundant torque and a driving experience that is as unique as its style. Three well-equipped models represent the CX-9 lineup for 2021.

The CX-9 competes with several well-known vehicles in the segment, including the 2021 Ford Explorer. Here, we introduce some interesting differences between both.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is priced right

A quality SUV in the CX-9's and Explorer's segment should not have a premium luxury price, unless it is specifically designed for that segment. The CX-9 offers better value for the lineup's segment and price range.

The CX-9's entry model, the GS, features an MSRP of $40,000. You will save over $4,500 over the base Explorer XLT with this option, and it also features i-Activ AWD, one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the industry, and more torque capability.

For less than the MSRP of the base Ford XLT, you can also have the mid-grade CX-9 GS-L. It adds paddle shifters, 20" wheels, more style, and other amenities that stack up against the Explorer.

The Explorer's second-lowest grade, the Limited, is priced at $49,799. This is actually more than the MSRP of the CX-9's highest grade (GT). Compared to all the amenities of the GT, the Explorer has a large cost increase to justify with its remaining models starting at $58,399 and $64,649.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 features excellence in safety

Families across Canada are discovering one of the CX-9's best-kept secrets: It is one of the highest-rated mid-size SUVs in safety, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. IIHS recently designated the CX-9 as a Top Safety Pick+, revealing impressive results in crashworthiness, vehicle-vehicle crash mitigation/avoidance, roof strength, cage/structure, and more.

Although the Ford Explorer rated highly, the CX-9 earned better marks in lower leg/foot protection and headlight safety.

The 2021 CX-9 includes a long list of other safety, convenience, entertainment, and comfort features that help make this crossover a favourite among many drivers.
