2021 Mazda3 Turbo vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla

The latest generation of the Mazda3 recently made waves throughout Canada with an award-winning design and promising performance. It was widely believed that there wasn't much to improve in the future, but Mazda gathered feedback from the most important people—owners. The response was loud and clear: add a turbocharged model. The result is one of the most talked-about upcoming vehicles, the Mazda3 Turbo.

With double the horsepower and torque than other vehicles in its class, many competitors are nervous. Here, we compare it to the Toyota Corolla.

The 2021 Mazda3 Turbo shreds the Corolla's performance

Combining with the Mazda3's award-winning style, the turbocharged Skyactiv 2.5L engine places the finishing touch on such an exciting vehicle. It generates up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with 93 octane, and nearly 230 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque with 87 octane. This provides you with the flexibility to use the fuel you want without a sacrifice in power.

The Corolla offers three engines across their lineup, but they are far outclassed by the performance of the Turbo. Several sedan trims receive a 1.8L four-cylinder engine that manages just 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque. A few higher-grade sedan trims and the hatchback receive a 2.0L four-cylinder that provides a small boost of 30 more horsepower, but that is the best the Corolla offers. It falls significantly short of the Mazda3 Turbo.

The Turbo's special calibration of its engine also syncs up with the rest of the Mazda3, resulting in a strong bond between the engine and other parts of the vehicle. This type of attention moves the Turbo even farther ahead of the Civic.

The 2021 Mazda3 Turbo's four-wheel intelligence

One of the most surprising differences in this comparison are the drivetrains. The Turbo features the acclaimed i-Active AWD system on every model. This boosts performance on different road surfaces. Combined with Canada's changing weather conditions, this equipment is important. However, the Corolla lineup only offers performance-limiting front-wheel drive.

Each Turbo receives the standard safety technologies from i-Activesense. Owners can upgrade to the Premium Package that includes Traffic Jam Assist and Smart Brake Support—new technologies not available with the Corolla.
