2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV vs PHEV: Which One is Right for You?

The new 2024 Mazda CX-90 stands out from the other three-row SUVs on the market due to its many advanced features, not the least of which are its powertrains. Here is a look at both the 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV and PHEV.

Refined power and impressive efficiency

The standard powertrain in the 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV is a brand new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that is paired with a mild-hybrid system. This solution gives the CX-90 a leg up on its mainstream competitors due to its combination of the smoothness of a six-cylinder and the efficiency of an electrified drivetrain. In standard guise, this engine delivers 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and the i-Activ AWD system. Despite this performance, highway fuel consumption is as low as 8.4 L/100km. If you want even more power, choosing the GT-P or Signature trim levels gives you access to the High-Output version of this same powertrain which is good for 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in exchange for a minimal increase in fuel consumption.

Up to 42 kilometers of electric range

If you want an impressive amount of power and the best level of efficiency offered by any gasoline-powered Mazda model, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV should get your attention. This SUV is the first plug-in hybrid model to be offered in Canada by Mazda, and it is one of the most impressive vehicles in its segment. This is because its powertrain combines a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine with a 17.8 kWh battery and an electric motor. The result is an output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque as well as the capability of driving up to 42 kilometres without using a drop of fuel. If, like most Canadian drivers, your daily commute is less than this distance, choosing the CX-90 PHEV means you could complete all of your driving on electric power only, while always having a gasoline engine as a backup for longer trips.

Both are great choices in the segment

Whether you choose the mild-hybrid or the plug-in hybrid powertrains, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is one of the best options in its segment due to its impressive level of luxury and equipment, its suite of advanced safety features, and its fun-to-drive nature that few competitors can replicate.
