Mazda Vehicles Among the Most Reliable, According to Consumer Reports

Mazda vehicles have long enjoyed an enviable reputation in terms of reliability and this has been confirmed in recent years by Consumer Reports.

When thinking of reliable vehicles, many think of Toyota and Honda, but it would be a mistake to forget about Mazda.

Indeed, Mazda vehicles have long featured among the most reliable options in their segment and recent studies have even shown an improvement, placing the company at or near the top of the list in terms of reliability.

In its annual report on automotive reliability, Consumer Reports, an independent magazine that tests all sorts of goods and services, has found Mazda vehicles to generate very few customer complaints.

For example, in the 2022 report, Mazda ranked fourth behind premium makes Lexus and BMW, as well as Toyota, but in front of Honda, a brand typically known to be very reliable.

An even better result was obtained in 2021, when Mazda was second overall, and in 2020 when the brand presented the lowest number of issues of any automaker.

Since most Mazda vehicles have not been entirely reworked since then, this means that the models currently sitting in our showroom are expected to be just as worry-free.

What makes Mazda vehicles so reliable?

There are many factors that explain how Mazda vehicles can be so reliable while still being modern and innovative. The main reason is the extensive research and the level of care that is being put into the development of new technologies by Mazda engineers. Indeed, this allows them to circumvent the main risk in terms of innovation, which is to launch a new product too quickly before all of the kinks have been worked out. This is why it is often a good idea to wait a year or two before purchasing a new model from some automakers. One solution to this problem is to keep relying on tried-and-true components, which has some merits, but can quickly lead to customers feeling like the company is stuck in the past.

By carefully engineering all of the problems out of its innovations, Mazda can launch new products and vehicles that are very reliable right from the start, despite being very technologically advanced. Take for example the Skyactiv line of engines that was launched over ten years ago now. Due to their innovative conception that reduces fuel consumption and increases power, these engines are still just as modern as those found in competing models, and they have the benefit of a solid reputation for durability which is lacking for newer powertrains.

Another fine example is the ubiquitous six-speed automatic transmission that has been found in almost every Mazda vehicle made in the last ten years. While it is true that competitors often have 8, 9, or even 10-speed transmissions, this is one of the cases where keeping a tried-and-true component is a good idea, since this transmission has shown a great record for reliability and efficiency.
